Week’s Top Sports News: From Marquez to MrBeast 📰

📒Sports Curated✒ #1

Hello! Hope you had a nice week👍, this is my first publication so thank you very much if you made it until here.

In august of 2023 my life changed, I came to life in France 🥖, as close as I could to the Geneva border because I started playing semi-professional handbol in Switzerland First league 🇨🇭. I’m living in the border just because its cheaper, a lot of people benefit of swiss income while living in France (not a bad life💰).

Now, I’m looking for a swiss job in sports, learning french and, of course, training is my daily life. But, since I’ve recently graduated in my sport management and marketing masters🎓 where my thesis was about personal brand in sports, and I have more time just until I find a job, I decided to launch this weekly newsletter📥.

I’ll try to keep it short, informative with lots of links and a bit personal so you feel closer to me and someday maybe, we can discuss topics if you think of replying 🫂.

In this newsletter there are three main sections. Feel free to jump directly in what intrerest you the most.

  1. What you need to know about most important sports leagues and events.

  2. Curated sport tweets, news and articles.

  3. My docuserie recomendation of the week.

What you need to know.

At this time of the year what are the most interesting championship battles in each sport 🥊.

MotoGP

With four rounds to go Ducati is dominating again the Championship battle, but this time it will not be that easy for the official team to clinch victory. Francesco Bagnaia the former champion of last year was dominating the standings, until the second part of the season started and Jorge Martín started winning.

The last Grand Prix Jorge Martín even became leader of the championship after the sprint race, but after this week race he is 27 points behind Peco Bagnaia. MotoGP Standings.

💭 This year’s new format has made it more interesting, giving points on saturday where a half longer race in distance is held and points given are 12 for the winner until 1 for the 9th position. On sunday there is still the race where 25 points are given to the winner until 1 point given to the 15th position.

💭Races usually are different eventhought they are held 1 day apart, drivers learn new ways, set up changes and tyre choices provide with different winners in both races. In the business side, people are more interested in fridays and saturdays because there’s grid posisitioning for races or points on the line, which translate in more people attending the grand prix during the weekends.

Football

First quarter of the season and things look quite interesting for the fans. The top 3 teams of the big five european leagues are within 2 points difference, link to the tweet.

F1

Redbull and Verstappen already have won the Championship with still 6 races to go. So, the most interesting things to follow is the evolution of the upgrades the teams are bringing to the following Grand Prix.

Cycling

The most important races have finished and now it’s trading time for the cyclist and teams. UAE and Jumbo-Visma teams dominated the season but next year can be different. Primoz Roglic signed for Bora after 8 seasons in Jumbo-Visma, but with new dennish star Jonas Vingedaard there was not place to compete in Le Tour de France for both.

Most victories at UWT-level in 2023. 12 | Evenepoel 11 | Vingegaard, Roglič 10 | Pogačar 8 | Philipsen 6 | Groves 5 | Yates A., Merlier 4 | Kooij, Laporte, Pedersen, Mohorič 3 | Ayuso, van der Poel. From climbers to sprinters, this is the list of the bests cyclists you should be aware right now.

NFL

NFL just faced the 7th week of competition, with eleven more to go and each team playing 17 games during the regular season, this are my highlights.

  • Kansas City (6-1) is up for another great season, the former championship and almost every year contender since Patrick Mahomes became the starter quarterback in the team winning 2 Super Bowls.

  • Miami Dolphins (5-2) are on the way to play another playoffs. This is just the 2nd year of Tyreek Hill, a running back league star traded from Kansas City.

  • Philadelphia Eagels (6 -1) last year NFC finalists are recreating last years regular season where they lost only 3 games.

  • San Francisco 49rs (5-2) last year Super Bowl finalists are on another great run, last year they lost 4 games in regular season.

I will discuss more teams or interesting topics as the season goes along.

NBA

Apple is reportedly discussing a $2 billion-per-year bid for all of Formula 1’s global media rights, similar to their exclusive setup with Major League Soccer. More into why this could happen in the article.

Netflix’s first live sports broadcast pairs up F1 drivers with pro golfers. Netflix’s first live sporting event is here  and it involves a golf tournament between athletes from the streamer’s Full Swing and Formula 1: Drive to Survive shows. The competition, called The Netflix Cup, will air live on the service on November 14th. There’s a video in the link showing the trailer.

💭Interestingly, netflix was the only streaming service company without streaming live sports, now they are getting into but they are not buying streaminig rights, instead they have created a competition of their own.

Cycling

NFL

The former Green Bay Packers star now playing in New York Jets was hoping for a remarkeable season in his 40 years old. During the first game he torn his Achilles, that means 9 months out of the pitch but he is aiming to be back this season, this will mean less than 5 months from the injury. More on how this could happen in the podcast.

Travis Kelce clinch a sucsesfull lateral pass during the Chiefs’ victorry against Broncos. Kelce defies coach Andy Reid by executing the play. As Kelce said in a podcast, 💭 I think this is the most underrated unused play in NFL, it’s risky but outcome its usually rewarding.

NFL its tasting Europe for expansion?. Ravens vs Titans filled up 61.000 spectators in Totenham Hotspurs stadium. NFL is certain ther is a market to explote in Europe even though, Joe Pompliano explains it will not be soon.

NBA

MrBeast’s Charlotte Hornets Deal Continues Trend Of Creator-Led Partnerships In Sports. Another intersting article from Joe Pompliano’s newsletter Huddle up, and this one is special for me beacusue my mater’s thesis was on personal branding and here we are. MrBeast’s “Feastables” brand recently signed a deal with the Charlotte Hornets to become the team’s official jersey patch sponsor.

This is the first time a creator-owned brand will grace an NBA jersey, and this announcement comes on the heels of the many partnerships signed by PRIME, Logan Paul, and KSI’s drink brand with sports teams and franchises.

Wembayama goes between the legs. The rookie is exceeding the expectations, 2,24 meters of agility. Will see what the future awaits for this raising star.

He will be back in Basel, then compete in Paris Masters and Davis Cup in Great Britain. He is currently ranked 39 in ATP, he aims to finish high to start next season in the Australian Open seeded higher.

International Olimpic Comitee

IOC Session approves LA28’s proposal for five additional sports. Baseball/softball, cricket (T20), flag football, lacrosse (sixes) and squash have been officially included as additional sports on the programme for the Olympic Games Los Angeles 2028 (LA28).

💭 This will potentially make more visible this huge sport business, giving a chance of new income streams. Baseball, Flag football (NFL but without contact) and lacrosse are huge in US and Cricket is the second sport most watch in the world, mainly in India, and finally Squash is looking for a boost in popularity.

My docuserie recomendation of the week.

After recent news of Ecclestone pleaded guilty to tax fraud at Southwark crown court in London. Bernie Ecclestone has received a 17-month suspended sentence after pleading guilty to fraud, accused of failing to declare more than £400m of overseas assets to the UK government.

I wanted to recommend a documentary he did with Dazn during the pandemic. Lucky! How it happened is a docuserie of 8 episodes of 1 hour each. They used a lot of historical footage to follow the 40 years on how Ecclestone got into F1 and then became the supremo of it.

There are also ilustrations to showcase meetings and important people that helps to follow the documentary, which is narrated by Ecclestone himself. It is a must watch for F1 fans or if you love to know how sports were created and got where they are now.
